Riot of colour
IF A multi-starrer a la Pammal K Sambandam is a recipe for success on the silver screen, the ongoing art exhibition at Lalit Kala Akademi is perhaps a parallel for the white canvas. Works of 25 artists, including some young talents, feature in the one-week expo of Vasan Publications, `Vikatan Vanna Kalanjiyam'.
Oil colours and water colours on the canvas with a variety ranging from abstract art to the conventional portraits and some dazzling works of glass painting are featured. The group of artists created the paintings during the course of workshops organised by `Chutti Vikatan', the children's magazine from the Vikatan group.
``The workshops were a rage with the children in various districts. The exhibition is to honour the artists who spared their time and knowledge to all the children,'' the publishers say.
For the artists too, it has been a unique association throughout the `Colour gallata' workshops. "Demonstrating art forms to the children is a gratifying experience. Their grasp of art is incredible, and like all other talents must be nurtured at an young age,'' says Lalit Kala Akademi award winning artist A.Viswan.
While Viswan and his team of artists look at the expo as a culmination of one year's efforts, it is also the time to remember some of the great talents they came across. ``There are also some students in the districts who baffled us with their creativity. But, there is certainly a lack of knowledge about fine arts and trends,'' says another artist and winner of several national and state awards C. Rajasekaran, who was present at 12 camps organised last year by Chutti Vikatan.
``But just like any other art form, this could have you in a trance. Art is just an obsession,'' an artist observed.
All that is there for the viewers to see. At Lalit Kala Akademi, between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m., till the January 27.
