Seven State highways to be improved in Hassan

HASSAN, JAN. 28. The Public Works Department has declared 2002 "Year of Roads" following the State Government's drive to improve the roads in the State. Under this, 300 km. of the seven State highways passing through the district will be re-carpeted in three years. The length of State highways in the district is 480 km.
Chandrashekaraiah, Executive Engineer, PWD, told The Hindu here that the Tiptur-Dudda-Hassan, Halebeedu-Arkalgud-Kannur, the Chikmagalur-Mudigere, the Sakleshpur-Virajpet, the Srirangapatna-Channarayapatna-Ariskere, and the Hirisave-Channarayapatna-Shanivarasanthe State highways were being improved under a three-year package scheme. Work on 60 km. of these roads had been completed.
He said the PWD had targeted the worst-affected stretches of these roads, which had not seen major improvement works for several decades. The department would take up improvement of other roads also, and it had received funds for those works.The cost of maintenance of the six State highways was Rs. 18.48 crore.
The Karnataka Road Development Corporation Limited would take up the improvement of the 95-km. Bilikere-Tarikere State Highway, which had not been included in the package, under a World Bank-aided scheme.
Mr. Chandrashekaraiah said the Minister for Revenue, H.C.Srikantaiah, had promised to expedite the works. On an average, three to four km. of roads were being re-carpeted daily. The target was 5 km.Expressing confidence that the work would be completed by the end of March, he said Vishal Infrastructure Limited, Bangalore, the agency responsible for the maintenance of these State highways, had set up four hot mix plants on them.
He said that 40 of the 71 major road improvement works taken up under NABARD II-VII Scheme had been completed.
