Nuclear energy only solution to power shortage, says expert

By Our Special Correspondent

SHIMOGA, JAN. 28. H.L.Bhat, Head, Department of Physics, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, said here on Monday that nuclear energy was the only alternative to meet the demand for power as hydel power sources had been exhausted.

Delivering the keynote address at the Southern India Science Fair-2002 organised by the Visvesvaraya Industrial and Technological Museum, Bangalore, the zilla panchayat, and Department of Public Instruction, Prof. Bhat sought greater encouragement for the exploitation of nuclear energy. "The country can develop only through it,'' he said.

Expressing happiness over the coincidence that the fair was being inaugurated on the birth anniversary of Homi J.Bhabha, he said it was only through experiments that students could understand science. The fair would go a long way in developing scientific temper among them.

Prof. Bhat delivered a special lecture on nuclear energy.

The zilla panchayat president, J.Fakirappa, who inaugurated the fair as the Minister for Social Welfare, Kagodu Thimmappa, who is in charge of the district, could not make it to the function, said science exhibitions were of great importance in leading society from ignorance to knowledge.

He said the Centre had approved the plan prepared by the zilla panchayat for streamlining education from the primary to the secondary levels.

It had promised to sanction Rs. 6.5 crore as the first instalment of the financial assistance to be granted for implementing the plan in 10 years.

M.Jalajabai, Director, DESERT, Bangalore, Kalgodu Rathnakar, Vice-President of zilla panchayat, and the CMC President, M.K.Sureshkumar, were present. H.M.Chandrasekharappa, MLA, presided over the function. K.Gangappa Gowda, Deputy Director of Public Instruction and Secretary of the Organising Committee, welcomed the gathering.

Nearly 400 students and 300 teachers from Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Pondicherry, and the State are participating in the three-day fair at the National Pre-University College on Balraj Urs Road.
