Kanakapura bypoll: 14 left in fray

BANGALORE, JAN. 28. Seven independent candidates, including the Kannada Chaluvali leader, Vatal Nagaraj, withdrew their nomination papers on Monday, leaving 14 candidates in the fray for the byelection to the Lok Sabha from Kanakapura constituency.

With this, the former BJP State unit President, K.S. Eshwarappa, the former Prime Minister, H.D. Deve Gowda (JD-S), and the Cooperation Minister, D.K. Shivakumar (Congress), are the main contenders for the prestigious seat. The list of 14 candidates was sent to the Chief Electoral Officer this evening after the withdrawal of the seven candidates.

Interestingly, there is one more Deve Gowda with the initials B.G, two Dyavegowdas and one more Shivakumar left in the fray. The other candidates are M. Venkatesh, Alur P. Nagappa, Maraditota Renuka Bhimappa, Ravikumar, Shaik Bahadur and Rajendra Prasad of ``Hotte Paksha''.

Apart from Mr. Nagaraj, the others who withdrew from the contest are Arunkumar M.N., Eswaraiah, Dyavaiah, L. Nagaraja, V. Vikramadityan and Siddaramiah.

The Returning Officer Mr. G.S. Narayanaswamy said Mr. Rajendra Prasad had sought police protection as he had received some threats.
