By Our Staff Correspondent

BELLARY FEB. 1. The CPI(M) has urged the Union Government to ban activities leading to communal clashes in the country.

Speaking at the valedictory function of the State-level conference here on Thursday, party leaders urged the secular and democratic forces to fight communal organisations.

The party adopted 18 resolutions on the occasion.

The General Secretary of the State unit of the party, M. Suryanarayan Rao, Gurushant, and V.G.K.Nair told presspersons that the conference took a serious view of developments and attempts being made by communal forces to disturb peace and harmony in the country after the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) came to power at the Centre. Attempts were on to disturb the peace in the State too. They said the conference adopted a resolution opposing the saffronisation of education by the Union Government. Opposing the recommendations of the Administrative Reforms Committee headed by Harnahalli Ramaswamy, they urged the State Government not to implement them.

The leaders appealed to the Government to ensure 12 hours of uninterrupted power supply to pumpsets of farmers, improve the PDS system, and to solve the problems of anganwadi workers and milk producers.

They said the conference adopted another resolution opposing the proposed amendments to the Labour Act. Expressing concern over the rise in atrocities on women, they urged the Government to initiate steps to curb them. The Centre and the State Government should provide houses to the to those who did not have them, and the beneficiaries should be selected by gram sabhas. Mr. Suryanarayan Rao, who was unanimously re-elected General Secretary of the State unit, constituted an 11-member executive committee at the meet..
