Awards for Nagaratnamma, 3 others

BANGALORE, FEB. 1. The Government has selected the noted professional theatre person, R. Nagaratnamma, the Bharathanatya exponent, Narmada, the painter, S. S. Manoli, and the singer, M. Prabhakar, for its prestigious Dr. Gubbi Veeranna, Shantala Natya, Varnashilpi Venkatappa, and Santashishunala Sheriff awards, respectively, for 2001.
The annual awards, each of which carries a cash prize of Rs. 1 lakh, a shawl, a memento and a citation are being given in recognition of the significant contributions of these artistes to their respective fields.
Announcing this here on Friday, the Minister of State for Kannada and Culture, Rani Satish, told presspersons that the committees, headed by Hirannaiah, K. Muralidhara Rao, V. Balu, and H. K. Narayana, respectively, selected them for the awards. Kedar, Secretary, Kannada and Culture Department, and the newly- appointed Director of the department, Somashekhar, were present.
Versatile stage talent
Ms. Nagaratnamma (76) is known for playing the role of Hindu mythological characters such as Bheema, Kamsa, Dasharatha and Ravana. She carved a niche for herself in the history of Kannada professional theatre by establishing the Stree Nataka Mandali, an exclusive theatre company for women, in 1958. The Government conferred on her the Rajyotsava Award in 1985.
Bharathanatya expert
Ms. Narmada (58), a graduate in science, had been a disciple of Kittappa Pillai of Tanjore for over 14 years. The Director of Shakuntala Nrityalaya, Ms. Narmada is known for her expertise in many aspects of Bharathanatya. She has bagged a number of awards including the Rajyotsava Award.
Post-modern artist
Mr. S.S.Manoli (61) of Gulbarga studied in Baroda College of Arts. A pioneer of post-modern art in the State, he has exhibited his paintings in the country and abroad. He won the State Lalitakala Academy Award in 1967.
A vocalist par excellence
Mr. M.Prabhakar (80) is a noted classical and light music vocalist. He is the younger brother of the noted Harikatha exponent, Vimalanandadas. The noted film artistes, M.Phandaribai and M.Mynavathi, are his younger sisters. He is known for popularising Dasa literature in musical form.
