A retired Assistant Director of Agriculture and his son have been sentenced to life imprisonment by the 1st Additional Sessions Judge of Mysore in a dowry death case.
A press release from the Director-General of Police (CoD) says B.N. Vijay Kumar of Talakadu in T. Narasipur taluk of Mysore District married Vanitha on October 21, 1991.
Vanitha's parents gave Rs. 1 lakh in cash and 250 grams of gold as dowry. Kumar, his father, Narayana Gowda, a retired Assistant Director of Agriculture, and his mother, Lakshmamma, asked Vanitha to bring an additional Rs. 1 lakh as dowry, and physically and mentally harassed her.
Although her parents paid Rs. 15,000 to Kumar, he and his parents continued to torture Vanitha. Unable to bear the harassment, Vanitha committed suicide by hanging at her father's house on April 25, 1996.
The Judge, M.G. Sudendra, sentenced Kumar and Gowda to life imprisonment, and Lakshmamma to three years' rigorous imprisonment.
The judge imposed a fine of Rs. 10,000 each on Kumar and his parents, the release says.
