Face CBI probe into assets, Gowda told

By Our Special Correspondent

BANGALORE FEB. 7. K. Venkatagiri Gowda, noted economist and former MP, has challenged the former Prime Minister, H.D. Deve Gowda, to face a probe by the CBI into his assets.

Addressing presspersons on Thursday, Dr. Gowda said Mr. Deve Gowda deserved to be called a "sin of the soil'' and not "son of the soil.'' He could not make the latter claim as he was not a farmer by profession, but a contractor. He belonged to the amorphous caste of farmers.

Dr. Gowda said that a case preferred by him against Mr. Deve Gowda seeking a CBI inquiry into his assets was pending in the High Court. On the basis of his affidavit, some other cases had been filed against Mr. Deve Gowda, and they were pending in the Supreme Court.

Dr. Venkatagiri Gowda is facing prosecution for a defamation case filed against him by Mr. Deve Gowda for writing three books containing allegations of corruption.

He claimed Mr. Deve Gowda had sent an emissary to him pleading for withdrawing the three books. About the defamation case, Dr. Gowda said the former Prime Minister had complained to a court in Delhi knowing full well that he lacked the resources to fight it. Mr. Deve Gowda, who called himself a poor farmer's son, had to explain as to how 400 registered deeds relating to property existed in the names of members of his family. The former MP came out wholeheartedly in support of the Congress candidate in the Kanakapura byelection, the Cooperation Minister, D.K. Shivakumar.

Urging the electorate of Kanakapura to reject Mr. Deve Gowda, he warned that his election would pose problems to both the NDA Government at the Centre and the S.M. Krishna Ministry in the State. He also called for voting against the BJP candidate, K.S.Eshwarappa, who too was an outsider to the constituency.

Dr. Gowda warned the JD(S) and JD(U) leaders against supporting Mr. Deve Gowda. In the ultimate, he would betray them and work for making his son, H.D. Revanna, the chief minister of Karnataka.
