8 killed as bus rams tree

BANGALORE, FEB. 7. Eight people were killed and 18 injured, nine of them seriously, when the KSRTC bus in which they were travelling rammed a tree in Naregal Police Station limits in Gadag District on Wednesday night.

The accident took place near the Kanti Basaveshwara Temple at Abbigeri village around 11.40 p.m.

While seven people died on the spot, one of the injured died on the way to hospital. Nine people who suffered grievous injuries were admitted to the Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) in Hubli, while nine others were admitted to the Government Hospital in Gadag.

The dead have been identified as Sharanaiah, a conductor attached to the KSRTC's Ron depot, Abdul Jeeja Tahasidhar, a constable attached to the 10th KSRP Battalion, Shiggaon, S.K. Chinnappa Gowdar, a resident of Chikkamannur and a Gadag District Armed Reserve (DAR) constable, Yamanurappa Hiremath of Mudhol, V.K. Goudar of Amingad in Hungund taluk, H.N. Hiregowdar of Kerur in Bagalkot District and Shivamurthaiah Ghoti of Bilgi.
