Wipro Infotech forays into laptop segment

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD FEB. 9. With its entry into the laptop segment through its `Little Genius' brand, Wipro Infotech is looking at cornering a 5-6 per cent of the Indian laptop market estimated to be 42,000 units for 2002 calendar year (according to IDC projections).

Wipro has come out with two laptops in 13.3 inch segment and hopes to score over the MNCs, which account for almost the entire Indian sales of nearly 35,000 units in 2001, by offering better networked support services of 275 channels, says Rajiv Bharathan, General Manager, Enterprise Products.

Announcing the launch in Hyderabad on Saturday, Mr. Bharathan said Little Genius was available in two models (Celeron based, and Pentium III), and the company was also planning to launch 14 inch TFT screen models this year.

While Rs. 270 crores of its Rs. 1,200 crore turnover is accounted for by PC business, it hopes to garner Rs. 15 crores from laptops.

The laptops are assembled at its Pondicherry facility and sourced from Taiwan. This was the first time a laptop was being sold with a `trolley' (and a bag), making it easier to pull along the 3 kg unit while travelling.
