New security net at Old Secretariat
By Sujay Mehdudia

NEW DELHI, FEB. 20. Installation of closed-circuit cameras, introduction of electronic smart cards to regulate entry, a new parking scheme for vehicles, a control room at the reception centre and new entry and exit points are part of an ambitious new security plan drawn up for the grand old Delhi Assembly.

While some of these measures would be in place before the Budget session beginning next month, work on others has already started. As part of the effort to revamp the security totally, it has been decided to permanently close the two main front entry and exit gates at Old Secretariat.

To regulate entry of vehicles, including those of the Chief Minister, Ministers and MLAs, a new gate is being opened. The approach road to this area has been widened and the old reception is being demolished. In its place, a new reception equipped with computers is coming up. The exit for all vehicles now would be from the P&T Building side.

The Assembly Secretariat has acquired land for a new parking lot to compensate for the land acquired by Metro Rail authorities on Alipur Road. The height of walls and railings around Old Secretariat is being raised from about 8 feet now to 15 feet. A six-foot-wide barbed wire fencing is being provided on the roof to separate the Assembly building from adjoining buildings.

To regulate entry inside the Assembly complex, new identity cards are being issued. The Speaker, Chaudhary Prem Singh, says there is a proposal to install cameras at vantage points inside the complex to monitor movement of visitors.
