HYDERABAD, FEB. 22. Osmania University is at loggerheads not just with their teachers but even with the retired teachers, who are seething with anger over the treatment meted out to them by the present administration. The bone of contention is the extension of pension as per the revised UGC scales to those teachers who retired before 1996 but are covered by the 1992 pension rules. While the University extended the revised pension to those retiring after 1996 but denied the same to senior teachers who retired before 1996. The Government issued a G.O. No. 95 in August 2000 for consolidation of pensions to retired teachers drawing UGC/ICAR/AICTE pay scales of 1986 and covered by A.P. Revised Pension Rules of 1980. But the University teachers, who retired before 1996, are covered by 1992 pension rules. These pre-1996 retired Osmania University teachers are questioning the logic behind excluding them from the beneficiaries list, while extending the benefits to all the retired teachers of Government and Affiliated colleges through the G.O. No. 95. "This is totally illogical", says Shyam Sunder Simha, president, O.U. Retired Teachers' Association. Interestingly, majority of the Universities extended the benefits implementing the G.O. No. 95 to those who retired before 1996, while Osmania University chose the other way. Despite representations to the Vice-Chancellor, D.C. Reddy, nothing was done. However, Dr. Simha feels that if the University was sincere it can extend the benefits by passing a resolution in the Executive Council (EC) meeting. But it is learnt that when some members tried to raise the issue in the last EC meeting, the Vice-Chancellor turned down the idea. ``When other Universities could adopt why not Osmania,'' is the argument of Dr. Simha.
