Sushma for consensus on banning exit polls

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI FEB. 23 Facing criticism within the BJP for the exit polls beamed on Doordarshan, the Union Information and Broadcasting Minister, Sushma Swaraj, today went on the defensive and said a decision on whether or not to ban such an exercise ought to be arrived at through political consensus.

Replying to a query on the exit polls -- particularly vis-a-vis reports of the U.P. Chief Minister, Rajnath Singh, being upset with her for the exit poll results beamed on Doordarshan -- Ms. Swaraj said at a briefing here: ''As a Minister, I have no problem with exit polls. But as a member of the BJP, I am upset with the results.''

Taking a position quite contrary to the one adopted by her party in 1999 when several Opposition parties had objected to the exit polls and the BJP had been all for it, Ms. Swaraj said al parties should review exit poll results for the past five years and evolve a consensus.
