NEW DELHI, FEB. 24. The Assamese writer, Indira Goswami, today received the 36th Jnanpith Award for literature from the Vice- President, Krishan Kant, at a function at the Vigyan Bhavan here. Speaking after the awards presentation, Mr. Kant said ``tensions and conflicts over the language issue appear to be totally misplaced''. ``While politics and social inequalities can be divisive, it is literature and creative arts which have a capacity to cross boundaries with facility and ease.'' Stressing the strength of the literature in regional languages, he expressed the hope that languages other than those in Schedule Eight of the Constitution would also be given recognition for awards. `Oral literature', where tradition is passed through generations, should also be recognised. The Nobel Laureate, V.S. Naipaul, the selection committee chairman, L.M. Singhvi, and the Bharatiya Jnanpith president, Indu Jain, were present at the function. _ UNI
