Hardly religious

Sir, — The unending incidents of communal discord and cold-blooded murders make every Indian hang his head in shame. What is appalling is the apathy and callousness with which the Government seems to be handling the issue. What is surprising is the lack of a strategy to educate, nay, civilise, the vast populace which wakes up to stare at abject poverty every morning.

The rulers should realise that the problem is hardly religious. That such disturbances are almost always confined to the lower classes is no secret. How many educated, employed men can we find holding a knife to the throat of his fellow countryman?

A cursory glance at the photographs of the marauding crowds reveals that there are more illiterate, unemployed, misguided youths than devoted followers of either Krishna or Mohammad. Give them food, education and work and they will gladly dump their gods. Meanwhile the truly religious men will weep for our country.
