PONDICHERRY MARCH 4. S P Kamalayazhini, a 13-year-old student, has presented, what is called, `Dark Boulders Theory' to scientists of the Planetary Society of the NASA in California, during her recent visit to the U.S., for taking part in a contest as part of the `Red Rover Goes to Mars' project, conducted by the NASA. Twelve students formed part of the team from different parts of the world, and five of them from India. When the student scientists took pictures, making use of the Mars Global Surveyor, the NASA scientists were thrilled to see a countless number of boulders resting on the Marsian slopes. Kamalayazhini explained her theory on the presence of dark boulders and it was received by the scientists. She said the dark boulders were `dolerite dykes'. She had made field visits to some parts in Tamil Nadu and made a comparative study of the dark boulders seen in Madurantakam. Kamalayazhini, a IX Std. student of the Amalorpavam Higher Secondary School here, took part in the contest as a student navigator. The Pondicherry Government presented her a cash award of Rs. 50,000.
