Tension grips Meerut

MEERUT, MARCH 4. Communal tension today gripped Meerut after a youth, Faraz, riding a scooter, was injured. He did not specify what hit him, but efforts were on to find out if he was a victim of rivalry within his own community. The Meerut Mayor, Shahid Akhade, appealed to Muslims not to be misled by rumours.

The IGP, D.N. Samal, said doctors who examined Faraz found a lacerated wound on his little toe.

Seventeen persons were arrested on charges of violating curfew in three station areas of the trouble-torn Aligarh town, where a special police officer was stabbed to death on Sunday, official sources said today.

No fresh incident was reported from Aligarh where curfew continued for the second consecutive day, a Home Department spokesperson said. No arrests have been made in connection with the stabbing incident.
