Fines to check riots in interior areas suggested

SURAT, MARCH 4. The Defence Minister, George Fernandes, today suggested imposition of hefty penalties on villages, to check the spread of communal violence in the interior areas of Gujarat. The State should also consider taking legal action against those fomenting violence, he said. Talking to reporters after a three-hour visit to the trouble-torn areas of the diamond city this afternoon, Mr. Fernandes said this would stop incidents of looting and help restore normality in the rural areas.
