Promote peace, PCI chief tells media

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI MARCH 5. Defining the role of the media in times of communal unrest, the chairman of the Press Council of India (PCI), K. Jayachandra Reddy, has said that the press in such situations should be "peace-makers and not abettors, trouble-shooters and not trouble-makers".

In an appeal to the media, he said the press should play its "noble role of promoting peace and harmony among the people in the present crisis in Gujarat". Having made the point that the media enjoys "the utmost freedom of expression", he said that any trend to disrupt peace and harmony "either directly or indirectly would be an anti-national act".

He reminded the media of its role in moulding public opinion along "correct lines with regard to the need of friendly and harmonious relations between various communities and religious groups and thus promote national solidarity".
