Cong. to support G.K. Vasan in RS polls
By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, MARCH 5. The Congress will extend support to the Tamil Maanila Congress (TMC) president, G.K. Vasan, in the Rajya Sabha biennial election in Tamil Nadu for which nominations open on March 7.

After Mr. Vasan's 20-minute meeting with the Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, in Delhi this evening, the party has decided to back his bid to gain entry into the Upper House.

Though Congress sources in Delhi said the party did not demand the TMC's merger with it as a quid pro quo for the support, the two leaders are said to have discussed the issue of merger. Indications are that Mr. Vasan has agreed to get back to the Congress high command in April on the merger issue.

With the Congress promising its support, Mr. Vasan's election to the Rajya Sabha is likely to be a smooth affair. As the support of 34 MLAs is required, the TMC can get a Rajya Sabha seat with backing from seven Congress MLAs and 11 Left party MLAs. The CPI and CPI(M) have already agreed to support him.
