AIMPLB to discuss Kanchi Acharya proposal

NEW DELHI, MARCH 5. The All-India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) tonight called an emergency meeting of its executive committee on March 10, to discuss the proposal mooted by the Kanchi Shankaracharya, Jayendra Saraswati, to allow temple construction outside the area where the Babri Masjid stood before demolition.

The meeting has been called following a two-hour dialogue an AIMPLB delegation _ led by its general secretary, Syed Nizamuddin _ had with the Acharya, the board spokesperson, S.Q.R. Illyas, said.

The Acharya had said the VHP would build a wall around the disputed site and begin construction outside the area.

On the Shahi Imam of Jama Masjid, Syed Ahmed Bukhari's contention that the board had no locus standi to discuss the dispute, Mr. Illyas said, ``we have been a party to the dispute since its inception.''
