By Our Legal Correspondent

NEW DELHI March 19. The Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission, J.S. Verma, is visiting Gujarat between March 20 and 22 to study the situation in the wake of the Godhra train carnage and the ensuing communal violence.

On March 1, the Commission had taken suo motu cognisance of news items reporting communal flare-up in the State and alleging inaction by the police and the highest functionaries in the State.

Subsequently, it received a number of petitions and reports from individuals and other bodies urging it to intervene.

In view of the urgency of the matter, the Commission asked the Gujarat Chief Secretary and the Director-General of Police to indicate measures being taken to prevent any escalation of the violence situation.

In response, a preliminary report was sent by the State and a comprehensive one was awaited. He is scheduled to visit Vadodara on March 21 and Godhra on March 22.
