Swamy calls for referendum on temple issue
By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, MARCH 19. The Janata Party president, Subramanian Swamy, today called for a referendum on the Ayodhya issue as part of the efforts to find a solution.

He told newspersons that the country could move on to tackle other issues after getting the Ayodhya problem out of the way. Referring to the RSS statement that Muslims in India should earn the goodwill of the Hindus to be safe here, Dr. Swamy said this was an ``unacceptable fascist threat''.

Claiming that fascist tendencies were bound to proliferate as long as the BJP was in power, he said the ``only salvation'' for India lay in bringing down the BJP-led NDA Government.

On the Sri Lankan peace process, Dr. Swamy said the LTTE chief, Prabakaran, had betrayed the Tamils by agreeing to give up the goal of Eelam.

He said his party would hold a demonstration in April to protest against the absence of concrete steps to rescue Tamil Nadu from its economic recession.
