NEW DELHI, MARCH 19. The Centre has appointed National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI), Nagpur to prepare a report on the Sethusamudram Canal Project and it would start implementing the project as soon as possible. Giving this information in the Lok Sabha, the Finance Minister, Yashwant Sinha, agreed with the MDMK member, Vaiko, ``that the project has been talked about for over a century and at various points of time, project reports and feasibility reports have been prepared. Now, if we want to move seriously ahead with this project, these reports will have to be updated''. He also told Mr. Vaiko that Sethusamudram project was of national importance and recognising this, the Prime Minister had made a commitment and Rs. 4 crores was allocated for it during the 1999 budget. ``This is the commitment of the Government and nobody is resiling from that commitment.'' Mr. Vaiko, who was participating in the budget debate told the House that it was dream project pending for more than 140 years.
