Siege of mosque ends

SRINAGAR, MARCH 19. The militant siege of a local mosque at Nowpora Mirgund ended this morning with security forces killing the two ultras who had been holed up inside since last evening.

Official sources told UNI this morning that both the militants were shot dead by sharp-shooters without damaging the mosque. Two AK rifles, ten magazines and four grenades were recovered from them.

An official press release said both the militants were killed in an encounter. However, unconfirmed reports said security forces used some gas, which resulted in the deaths.

The Army cordon around the mosque was further tightened late last night after militants attacked security forces from outside to help the holed-up militants escape.

Though there was no firing during the night, the holed-up militants renewed gun-fire this morning.

They had entered the mosque last evening after being challenged by a patrol party.
