Opinion - Letters to the Editor

The real intent

Sir, — The statement issued by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh at the end of its Bangalore session is most unfortunate. The Muslim community has been living through a nightmare due to the Gujarat genocide. It is no secret that this was a well- planned attack to finish off the Muslims' trade in the State. We are sure that the average Hindus and others have no ill will against the Muslims and it is only the Sangh Parivar, which has been spreading hatred against minorities in general and the Muslims in particular. The RSS has realised that the Ram temple campaign is losing its appeal and so it wants to wrest the disputed site through veiled threats to a battered community. But can this solve the problem? It will only whet the appetite of the RSS for more and then a campaign will be launched for Kashi, Mathura and the 3000 and odd mosques which are supposed to have come up by demolishing temples. The real issue at stake is not temples. What the RSS and the Sangh Parivar want is to keep the communal temperatures high so that the process of social transformation is halted and the quest for social, economic and gender justice is suppressed.

Ram Puniyani,

Mumbai
