KOLKATA, MARCH 22. Mark Julian Vernon Ingty made a memorable Duleep Trophy debut by sending Central Zone crashing to a 141-run defeat against East at the Eden Gardens here on Friday. Playing his second first-class season, the 25-year-old Shillong-born right-arm medium pacer from Assam captured four central top-order batsmen in a sustained spell of nine overs conceding just 29 runs. Thereafter, Bengal's veteran left-arm spinner Utpal Chatterjee, medium pacer Laxmi Ratan Shukla and off-spinner Sourashish Lahiri cleaned up the rest to give East a comfortable win in the first encounter of the premier championship. It was central's second successive loss, the first coming at the hands of West at Rajkot. Chasing a victory target of 263 in 49 overs, Central took up the challenge in right earnest. Two quick dismissals of two Yadavs - Jyoti and Jai Prakash - should have forced Central to opt for safety first tactics. It was not to be. First innings centurion Yere Goud and Rahul Kanwat played reckless shots to fall to Ingty to plunge Central further into a hole. Shukla then had Rohit Jhalani and a well settled Gagan Khoda, the former falling to a defensive shot and the latter driving uppishly to point. By now the writing was clear on the wall. Only Harvinder Singh (21 not out) and Narendra Hirwani (20) fought back but it was too late. Century by R.R. Parida Earlier, East, resuming with the overnight score of 102 for two, was lifted to 211 all out by a terrific century by Reshmi Ranjan Parida. His 127 (274m, 197b, 18x4) was the foundation on which the victory was built. If it was Harvinder who gave Central the breakthrough this morning removing Sanjay Raul for 37, off-spinner Kulamani Parida extracted prodigious turn to bore through the East innings with a haul of six for 39 in 21.1 over. East would next meet North at New Delhi beginning March 26. The team would see three changes from the one that won today. National callup to Deep Dasgupta and Shiv Sundar Das enabled Devang Gandhi of Bengal and Parag Das of Assam to take up the vacant opening slots. Paceman Ajay Barik was dropped and his Orissa statemate P. Jayachandra was taken in. The rest of the team members kept their places with Sanjay Raul at the helm. lThe scores: East Zone - 1st innings: 365. Central Zone - 1st innings: 314.
