Helmet rule again, after campaign

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI March 26. The Government is planning to strictly enforce the helmet rule for two-wheeler riders. However, the exercise will be preceded by a publicity and awareness campaign to stress the importance of wearing helmets.

Besides, the Government will study all possible objections to and reservations about wearing helmets. As, in the past, largescale non-compliance eventually led to the waiver of the rule, the Government does not want to reintroduce it hastily.

Efforts will also be directed at designing more acceptable and ``user-friendly'' helmets which will take into account objections from pillion-riders.

One of the main objections by riders arises from widespread theft of helmets kept locked on the vehicle.
