Toddy coops.: tappers plan stir

By Our Staff Reporter

KOCHI MARCH 26. Toddy-tappers' unions are launching an agitation across the State on Wednesday to protest the reported move by the Government to disband the toddy cooperatives and to introduce toddy-shop licensing.

The Kerala Kallu Chethu Vyavasaya Thozhilali coordination council will picket district collectorates and assistant excise commissioners' offices on Wednesday.

The convener of the coordination council, K.M. Sudhakaran, said at a press conference here on Tuesday that the Government had not yet come out with the details of the liquor policy.

It was high time the Government came out with the policy for 2002-03.

He alleged that it was the contradictory promises given to the liquor barons and the bishops that were holding the Government from announcing the liquor policy.

He said the reported move to limit the number of shops to 4,000 would cause loss of jobs for the workers in the nearly 2,000 others. This would be opposed by the unions.
