Letters to the Editor
Sir, Your Editorial "Oscars strike quality" on the change in the racist attitude in awarding the Oscars (March 26) was appealing and noteworthy. World cinema sanguinely stands to gain from this healthy revision and would surely make the Oscars the most popular and acknowledged award ceremony in the world. The presentation of the Best Actress award to Halle Berry, the Best Actor award to Denzel Washington and the Honorary Oscar to Sydney Poitier should eliminate any qualms or uncertainties that may surface regarding racial prejudice in declaring Bosnia's ``No Man's Land'' the Best Foreign Language Film. As Aamir Khan reportedly said the theme of the Bosnian film was indeed very pertinent in the prevailing global conditions. Sairam Sanath Kumar, Thrissur, Kerala Sir, Bollywood blockbuster "Lagaan" did not give India the fame in the form of the Oscar that it sought. But Aamir Khan's and Asoutosh Gowarikar's graceful and dignified behaviour at the 74th Academy Awards ceremony on Sunday after losing the Oscar did India proud. They have shown the world that Indians can be content when others are elevated above them, India can rejoice when another country is preferred to it and that we give credit to others without complaining. Omar Luther King, Shillong
