Sir, The Supreme Court's dismissal of a contempt petition against Mr. Vajpayee and five others for having violated its order of March 14 is a balanced and well-conceived order (March 23). The court has adopted the doctrine of interest republicaeut sit finis litum (in the interest of the State there should be an end to litigations). In such cases, the petitioner has to fail or succeed on his own evidence and not on the latches of the opposite party. In view of the judiciary overstraining to live up to the people's expectations, the court's observation must have made the petitioner realise that acting in haste will end in repenting in leisure.
