'Mazaar' desecrated, U.P. town tense

BAHRAICH (U.P.) MARCH 30. A `mazaar' was allegedly desecrated by miscreants in the city this morning, sparking off retaliation with a mob attacking places of worship and setting ablaze vehicles, forcing authorities to clamp prohibitory orders.

As the news of the alleged desecration spread, a mob set ablaze vehicles and threw stones at a police party in Ghataghar and post office area, the DIG, Gurbachan Lal, told reporters.

It later tried to damage a flag atop a temple in Idgah and threw stones at another temple in Kazipura area. About 100 people have been arrested so far, he said, adding 30 of them have been booked for the desecration.

Senior civil and police officials rushed to the spot and forces have been deployed in strength in the area, Mr. Lal said. Additional forces have been sought from adjoining districts. The situation, though tense, was under control, the DIG said. However, unconfirmed sources said reports of brick-batting were coming in from different parts of the city.

Meanwhile, the BJP MLC, Subhash Tripathi, charged police with discriminating against the majority community. — PTI
