EPGL's fourth unit in China

By Our Staff Correspondent

MUMBAI, MARCH 30. Essel Propack Guangzhou (EPGL), a subsidiary of Essel Propack, has inaugurated its fourth new plant at the Guangzhou province in China.

This fourth plant will increase Essel Propack's Chinese capacity to cater to the future demands of the Chinese market for laminated tubes.

``With the commissioning of the fourth new plant, Essel Propack's Chinese subsidiary is now positioned to supply the needs of the entire East Asian markets,''said Mr. Cyrus Bagwadia, CEO, Essel Propack. At present, EPGL China enjoys 70 per cent share of the Chinese market in laminated tubes.

The new plant will have a capacity to produce 45 million sq. metres of special laminates and 550 million laminated tubes annually.

These will cater to mainly packaging material for pharmaceuticals, toothpaste, cosmetics, food and other industrial products.

Essel's association with China started in July 1997 when it set up the first 100 per cent foreign owned company in Guangzhou Economic and Technological Development Zone with an initial investment of $6 million.

Today, Essel Propack has four factories in Guangzhou and Shanghai with an investment of $40 million.

The company has been expanding elsewhere too. It set up its first overseas venture in Egypt in 1993 to cater to North Africa and Middle East markets.
