Serbia under pressure to hand over suspects

BELGRADE (Yugoslavia) MARCH. 30. Serbia's Prime Minister, facing a weekend deadline to hand over war crimes suspects, said on Friday that arrests and extraditions were possible within three to four days and were needed to avoid sanctions and international isolation. "If we do not cooperate, we could face international isolation and U.S. sanctions, literally within days,'' Prime Minister, Zoran Djindjic, warned.

Mr. Djindjic's comments indicated that Serbian police may be preparing to hand over some of 15 indicted Serb war crimes suspects. Among those in hiding in Serbia is one of the tribunal's most-wanted fugitives: Gen. Ratko Mladic, the wartime military leader of the Bosnian Serbs.

However, Mr. Djindjic indicated a reluctance to go after Mr. Mladic, a Bosnian Serb who enjoys widespread support within Serbia.
