CHAPRA, BIHAR, MARCH 30. The two-day siege of the Chapra jail ended today after a clash between the inmates and the police leaving five prisoners dead and four policemen, including a Superintendent, injured. To end the siege the police decided to break the lock placed on the main gate by the inmates last night, which triggered stone pelting by the prisoners in which four policemen were injured before the police fired in self-defence. In the police firing seven prisoners were wounded of which five died in the hospital. Trouble started on Thursday night when authorities tried to transfer five convicts from the Chapra Jail to the Buxar Jail. The co-prisoners of the convicts, mostly undertrials, prevented jail employees from escorting the convicts and chased them away. Some prisoners even locked the main entrance of the jail and blocked security personnel, wardens and jail employees from entering the jail premises. Official sources here said jawans of the Central Security Forces, commandos and district police participated in the operation to regain control of the jail.
