Kerala-Thiruvananthapuram
By Our Staff Reporter
Speaking at a civic reception accorded to the Union Minister of State for Railways, O. Rajagopal, here on Wednesday, the federation president, T. A. John, and the general secretary, Punchakari G. Raveendran Nair, urged the Minister to intervene in this matter. According to the federation office-bearers, the proposed satellite terminal at Kochuveli would cause great hardship to hundreds of railway commuters who arrive at the satellite terminal by long distance trains from various destinations. Moreover, the federation office-bearers pointed out that the commuters are likely to be fleeced by taxies and autorickshaws since the terminal would be far away from the city. The federation suggested that Kochuveli be converted into a coach maintenance yard. The BJP leader and a member of the Railway's Passenger Amenities Committee, K. Raman Pillai, sought the introduction of a new superfast express between Kanyakumari and Kashmir in place of the existing Himasagar Express from Kanyakumari. The former president of the FRAT, K. P. Karunakaran Nair, suggested that the land housing the Vanchi Poor Fund be acquired for the development of railway projects in the city.
