CPI slams privatisation of water supply

By Our Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM March 30 . The ongoing 18th Party Congress of the CPI has strongly criticised `privatisation' of drinking water supply in different parts of the country.

A resolution adopted by the Party Congress today said if supply of drinking water became a profit-making business, it would mean denial of basic rights of the people.

India, being one of the poorest countries of the world with very low level of human development, privatisation of water supply in some States such as Andhra Pradesh would have dangerous implications, the resolution said.

The second resolution adopted by the Congress regretted the failure of successive Governments at the Centre to honour their commitment to provide 33.3 per cent reservation for women in State Assemblies and Parliament.

It urged the Government to table the Bill now before Parliament for discussion and to put it to vote for a final outcome.

The third resolution adopted by the Congress urged the Union Government to convene a meeting of representatives of the related State Governments to secure their consent for linking peninsular rivers such as Mahanadi, Godavari, Krishna, Cauvery and Vaigai. The National Water Development Agency had prepared a feasibility report and it was ready for implementation, the resolution pointed out.

The fourth resolution of the Congress criticised the Central Government's decision to decontrol the sugar industry.

The resolution called upon the Government to restore the earlier policy of fixing regressive minimum support price for sugar and not to leave the sugarcane growers at the mercy of the market.

The fifth resolution by the Congress strongly condemned the `outrageous' attack on the Orissa Assembly by VHP-Bajrang Dal activists on March 16. Another resolution adopted by the Congress expressed solidarity with the Palestinian people and expressed shock and indignation at the continued `barbaric aggression' on the Palestinian people.
