Caddick enters 200 club

AUCKLAND March 30. Andy Caddick started his Test career in style with the prized wicket of Australian captain Allan Border in the 1993 Old Trafford Ashes Test. Craig McMillan became the New Zealand-born pace bowler's 200th victim during an inspired spell of bowling before lunch on the opening day of the third Test on Saturday.

Caddick, 33, reached his milestone with four wickets in the opening session as New Zealand collapsed to 19 for four before recovering to 151 for five at close.

``I thought I might have got one or two in the first session, but I'm very pleased and happy,'' he said.

Caddick, playing in his 53rd test, took a long time to get established in the England side.

``Unfortunately injury and selectors do come along,'' he said. ``I am happy now I am a regular in the team.''

The Somerset paceman said he had received some setbacks, notably his omission from the Ashes tour in 1998-99.

``That one hurt after I'd been told I would be in if I kept taking wickets,'' he said. ``Obviously 105 for the summer wasn't enough. There are always low points in a player's career, so when highs come along you do enjoy them.''

The absence of Darren Gough from the Test leg of the New Zealand tour had put more responsibility on Caddick's shoulders, a burden he relishes.

``More has definitely been on my shoulders with Goughie not here,'' Caddick said. ``I actually enjoy having more responsibility. If you have responsibility you tend to get on with it a bit more and not think about.''

He also paid tribute to his captain Nasser Hussain and coach Duncan Fletcher. ``Nasser as a captain is brilliant,'' he said. ``He always backs me. He knows what you are trying to do. We have a good relationship and the experience of Duncan Fletcher works well.''
