In a statement here, the Member of Parliament said the villagers along the coast had to commute by vehicles to Mamallapuram to earn their livelihood. Also, if the people were to reach the taluk office at Thirukazhukundram, they had to use the East Coast Road for just half a kilometre. This being the case, the levy of toll rates to the tune of Rs. 24 per single trip between the destinations on the ECR was unfair, Mr.Vaiko said. ``Usually, toll rates are levied for by-pass road that heavy vehicles might use to avoid other busy main road. But in this case, the ECR is the main road for the villagers,'' he said.
