Replying to a question from P. Ramiah during Question Hour in the Legislative Council on Wednesday, he said Rs. 8,667 crore was required to complete irrigation schemes, including those in the Krishna and Cauvery basins. The Government had about Rs. 5,640 crore on irrigation projects for nearly 10 lakh hectares, he added. He said the Government had constituted the Krishna Bhagya Jala Nigam Ltd. to raise funds through bonds for the Upper Krishna projects, and the Karnataka Irrigation Corporation to raise funds for the other Krishna Basin projects. The Government had obtained loans from the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) and received grants from the Irrigation Benefit Programme of the Union Government, he added. To a question from Ramachandra Gowda, Mr. Patil said the Government had initiated several measures to ensure quality of work. However, there was much more to be done in the field of quality enforcement. The Government was contemplating introducing in the confidential report of the executing engineer, a special reference to his ability to maintain quality in projects, the minister added.
