Opinion - Letters to the Editor

Bad influence

Sir, — The Editorial `Invading young minds' (April 8) is an eye-opener, especially to women who waste their time by sitting before the idiot box. This addiction is more dangerous than liquor or drugs, which bring destruction to the individual and society in the long run. But addiction to television spoils not only the atmosphere at home but also the individual psyche. The warning is not for children, but for parents.

The serials seem to nurture vandalism and violence with their anti-hero presentations. In one of the Tamil serials, the hero is bent upon destroying a family by various tactics. Of course, one can derive value from the negative depiction. But it is taken as entertainment, which corrodes the young minds. Volunteer organisations, peer groups and religious institutions must take efforts to inculcate values and try to strengthen young minds. The depletion of values sounds an alarm; it is a pity that people are turning a deaf ear to it.

Padma Srinivasan,
Madurai
