IT enabled services drive software exports

NEW DELHI APRIL 8. Despite global recession which was accentuated by the September 11 strikes, India's exports of computer software and IT enabled services have grown by 40 per cent during 2001-02, according to provisional estimates made by the Electronics and Computer Software Export Promotion Council (ESC).

Exports are estimated to have increased to Rs. 38,500 crores ($7.8 billion) from Rs. 27,500 crores ($5.97 billion) in the same period last year. In dollar terms, the growth was assessed at 31.43 per cent. The ESC is analysing the export figures to ascertain the top destinations of exports and top players.

The ESC's estimates on exports of electronic hardware indicate that the growth was encouraging at 21.4 per cent as compared to the same period in the previous year. In absolute terms, exports of electronic hardware were at Rs. 5,800 crores ($1.1 billion) as against Rs. 4,788 crores ($1.04 billion) during the same period last year. In dollar terms, exports have grown by 13.64 per cent.

Combined exports of software services and electronic hardware have registered a growth of 37.20 per cent (27.79 per cent in dollar terms) in 2001-02 as compared with the same period in the previous year. In absolute terms, combined exports have grown to Rs. 44,300 crores ($9 billion) from Rs. 32,288 crores ($7 billion) in the same period last previous year.
