Sculptor dead

PARIS APRIL. 8. Janine Mongillat, well-known artist and sculptor and the wife of the renowned Indian artist Raza died at a Paris hospital on Friday.

As Mr. Raza and I walked back from the hospital to his home, he talked about Ms. Janine and their meeting at the Ecole de Beaux Arts in Paris in the early 50s. "There were just a handful of truly excellent students in my class, and Janine was one of them. She never lost her integrity, her honesty or her spirit. Just a week before she left us, she was still talking about her next exhibition, scheduled for May,'' he said.Ms. Janiine Mongillat's work which hangs in major galleries and collections around the world was greatly influenced by India and her association with Mr. RazaMs. Janine Mongillat's collages, paintings and sculptures are often inhabited by a playfulness that belie the seriousness of her quest. Ms. Janine Mongillat 's work was exhibited around the world, including France, U.S., India, Norway, Italy and Germany. Bombay's prestigious Gallerie Chemould held two exhibitions of her work, in 1968 and 1988.
