Maths stake claim to property in Hubli

By Our Special Correspondent

HUBLI April 8. A new kind of agitation is brewing in Hubli over what is described as saving the property of a Veerashaiva math.

The subject of the agitation has been the control of seven-acre prime property located near the Hubli Railway Station on the busy Durgad Bail Road, on which the Akay Industries, Hubli, is located.

The swamijis of Rudrakshimath and Shiggavi Math had been claiming that the property belonged to them and had been given on lease and the lessee had been unauthorisedly trying to alienate the property without any reference to them.

Akay Industries refuted the charge and said that it had got the permanent lease wherein it had been stipulated that the lessee had the right to sublet the property in any way and that the lessor had no right to do any thing.

It is said that in 1888 the two maths leased 10 acres of land to New Prince of Wales Press for setting up an industry. In 1934, Arjun Khimji (Akay) Ginning and Pressing Company took possession of the land from the original lessee.

The swamijis questioned the right of Akay Industries in disposing of the land, and of the propriety of the officials in having permitted suitable entries in the record of rights.

The Akay Industries have come out with a statement that the land had been permanently leased to the original lessee, which, in turn, assigned the same to them. The portion of the land had been transferred to others and that the deeds were registered and there was nothing illegal. No records had been tampered with or changed illegally.

The Veerashaiva swamijis, under the leadership of the swamiji of Murusavira Math, one of the leading Veerashaiva maths, have been holding confabulations with their followers on how the property in question should be restored to original owners.

As part of the agitation, the swamijis, led by the Junior and the senior swamiji of the Murusavira Math, took out a procession on Monday in support of their claims.

The procession, which started from Murusavira Math, passed through the main roads of Hubli, and reached Akay Industries. The police foiled attempts of the processionists to gatecrash into the premises and did not permit the swamijis to stage a dharna. The swamijis presented a memorandum to the Tahsildar of Hubli, before dispersing.
