Model township planned for Gulbarga city

By Our Staff Correspondent

GULBARGA April 8. The Karnataka Housing Board will build a model township on a 210-acre plot on the outskirts of Gulbarga city on Afsalpur-Gulbarga Road with an international consultant overseeing its design and construction.

Disclosing this to The Hindu here on Monday, the Housing Minister, Qamar-ul-Islam, said the model township would come up on the land first acquired for the construction of an airport.

As the airport project had been shifted to a much bigger area on Gulbarga-Sedam Road, the land acquired earlier had now been handed over to the Housing Board for constructing a housing complex with all modern amenities.

The Minister said the well-known architect, Kiran Grover, along with the Housing Commissioner, Bharatlal Meena, and the Deputy Commissioner, M.Lakshminarayana, inspected the site on March 31. They studied the geographical location of the land to prepare the design for the model township.

He said W.S.Atkin, a U.K.-based housing consultant company, had been appointed as the consultant for the project, which would be implemented under turnkey basis.

Mr. Qamar-ul-Islam said the model township would be ready for occupation within two years and it would have different blocks to suit the requirements of different sections of society. There was a demand for quarters for government officers and staff of different cadres, judicial officers and police officers.

There was also a proposal to construct houses to meet the requirements of the middle and lower-middle classes of society.

He said for the first time, the design of houses in the township would be prepared based on the requirements of the different sections of society in consultation with them. For instance, the architect would be asked to consult the officials of the Public Works and Home departments on their requirements and the houses would be consulted as per the design and requirements of the departments concerned.

There was a proposal to construct a block for judicial officers and senior officials of the Union and State governments.

Mr. Qamar-ul-Islam said that he had held preliminary discussion with the Home Minister, Mallikarjun Kharge, and the Public Works Minister, Dharam Singh, about the proposal and that they had evinced interest in purchasing houses in the township for housing for the officials and staff of their respective departments.
