Pondicherry
By Deepa H. Ramakrishnan
For the first time, a pilot garbage collection and segregation project will be launched in Kuilapalayam and Lakshmipuram villages, which are located near Auroville. Speaking to The Hindu, Gillian, a resident of Auroville, who is the coordinator of the `Kuilapalayam, Lakshmipuram, Auroville Solid Waste Management Programme', says ``most of these villages have played an important part in the development of Auroville and the community (Auroville) would now like to give back something to the people''. Under the programme, garbage will be collected from each of the 700 households in Kuilapalayam and around 80 in Lakshmipuram daily and segregated. Each of these households would be given two dustbins--a red one and a green one--so that the residents can separate the garbage into recyclable and compostable. Auroville, with the expertise from Exnora and the cooperation of local residents, would launch the programme on April 15, according to Chitra Shah of Exnora. Auroville's own solid waste management expert Pratul will be supervising the operation. Two men have been appointed to collect the garbage from the homes and then segregate it. They would be provided with equipment, tricycles, gloves and uniforms. All this has been possible with the financial assistance from the State Bank of India, which has provided Rs 40,000 for the project, he says.
