Manan Chandra records day's best break

KOLKATA APRIL 8. The top Indians Manan Chandra and Pankaj Advani recorded facile wins in their preliminary group league matches to make a confident beginning for the host in the fourth Asian under-21 snooker, which got underway here at the Calcutta Swimming Club on Monday.

Last championship runner-up Manan Chandra potted fluently to clinch a 4-0 win over Sri Lankan youngster Don Shanil L. Nethicumara in Group A. Along the way he scored a rapid 82 break — the day's best — in the first frame to win it 99-0 and with it put the stamp of authority right from the beginning. The next three frames in the best-of-seven match came along as smoothly to read 57-11, 71-5, and 117-9 in Chandra's favour.

Pankaj Advani started hesitantly in his Group B match, but soon worked up steam to account for K.P.M. Arif of Bangladesh 4-1.

Advani lost the first frame 44-58 and then recovered remarkably to win the next four frames — each by a commanding margin — to win the match. Advani's best came in the fifth frame, where he scored a break of 44.

The local boy, Mudit Poddar, was locked in a close match against Malaysia's Mun Kit Thean after leading 2-0. But he failed to hold on to the initial advantage and finally lost 3-4.

The upset of the afternoon was in a Middleeast versus Southeast Asia match as Habib Sabah Mahmood of Bahrain got the better of second-seeded Ruttanon Kematat of Thailand 4-3.

The two impressive players of the day were the fluent scoring Junhui Ding of China, who brushed aside Mehedi Hasan of Bangladesh 4-0 with a string of half century breaks, and Pramual Janthat of Thailand, who had a runaway 4-0 win against Young-Hee Shin of South Korea.
