BHEL power sector SR profit up 34 p.c.

CHENNAI APRIL 10. BHEL Power Sector, Southern Region (BHEL-PSSR) has recorded a 9.5 per cent increase in its turnover at Rs. 347 crores during 2001-02 against Rs. 317 crores. The profit, before taxation, has risen by 34 per cent to Rs. 52 crores from Rs. 39 crores, according to N. Kamalanathan, General Manager, BHEL-PSSR.

Briefing presspersons on the activities and performance of the power sector, southern region, Mr. Kamalanathan said the company completed orders worth Rs. 257 crores in 2001-02 against Rs. 110 crores. As on March 31, 2002, the company had unexecuted orders worth Rs. 628 crores.

BHEL-PSSR is catering to the service needs of power utilities and industries located in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Karnakta, Orissa and Union Territory of Pondicherry.

Mr. Kamalanathan said the company, after successfully adding 100 MW at Kovilkalappal and another 100 MW in an advanced stage of erection of Valuthur power project, had started work at the 101 MW Kuttalam power project for TNEB.

He said BHEL-PSSR was actively engaged in adding six units of 500 MW in the southern region, which include four units at Talcher thermal power project, one unit each at Simhadri and Ramagundam thermal power projects.

Projects totalling 4,000 MW are under construction by PSSR including 40 MW cogeneration project for Chennai Petroleum Corporation in Manali near Chennai and the 150 MW Pykara hydro electric power for Tamil Nadu Electricity Board, 210 MW Raichur (expansion) thermal power project and the fourth unit (60 MW) of the 240 MW Gerusoppa hydro power project for Karnataka Power Corporation, 20 MW Kabini dam hydro power project for Subhash projects in Karnataka, 240 MW captive power project for Nalco (expansion) and three hydroelectric pumps of 18 MW each at Srisailam (AP) for Alimineti Madhava Reddy project.

Orders for construction of about 2,500 MW are expected by the company which include 500 MW coal Bellary power project for KPCL, 500 MW Tuticorin expansion projects for TNEB, 500 MW (2 x 250 MW) at Neyveli Lignite Corporation, two sets of 235 MW steam turbine-generator sets for Kaiga atomic power plant expansion, 163 MW Athirapally hydro power project for KSEB and 100 MW Kuttiyadi hydro power project for KSEB.
