Opinion - Letters to the Editor

Wrong in two ways

Sir, — Your Editorial `India and the LTTE' (April 10): If acted upon in haste, it could scuttle the current peace initiatives in Sri Lanka. You state that New Delhi's silence at "the unfolding events" in Sri Lanka is "inexplicable", "perplexing", and, elsewhere, "glaringly inconsistent".

You are wrong on two counts. First, at this moment, India is called upon to facilitate peace and reconciliation in the island-nation.

We need not actively broker peace but, by our silence, play the role. This is not the right time to seek our pound of flesh. Moreover, our national interests are better served by peace and stability in our neighbourhood. If our silence ushers in peace in Sri Lanka, so be it. The time for justice will follow.

Louis Jude Selvadoray,
Bangalore
