Allies plan `strategy session'

By K.V. Prasad

NEW DELHI APRIL 12. In an effort to carry their "oust Modi" campaign inside Parliament, some MPs belonging to the constituents of the ruling National Democratic Alliance plan to hold a strategy session soon after the Houses resume sitting on Monday.

Ever since the Vishwa Hindu Parishad pushed forward the Ram temple construction plan at Ayodhya, MPs belonging to the Janata Dal (United), the Telugu Desam Party, the Samata Party, the Trinamool Congress, the Lok Janshakti and the Indian National Lok Dal have begun to coordinate activities in the Lok Sabha opposing the move.

The former Union Minister and JD(U) leader, Devendra Prasad Yadav, told The Hindu today that some MPs belonging to the above mentioned parties would meet and chart out a joint strategy. The JD(U), the TDP, the Trinamool Congress and the Lok Janshakti have all demanded that the Gujarat Chief Minister, Narendra Modi, step down. "It would be better if Mr. Modi steps down from the post before Parliament resumes sitting on Monday after the recess as it would improve the situation,'' Mr. Yadav said.

Reiterating the party stand, he said that while Mr. Modi had likened the Gujarat violence to Newton's third law, he would do well to remember another one on gravitational force.

Even though the Samata Party had officially retracted its earlier demand, several party MPs are understood to be of the view that in the light of the continuing violence in Gujarat, the Chief Minister should resign.
